9th East Surrey of 72Brigade, 24th Division, arrived in the Ypres salient in early January, 1916 and on 7th January took over the front line trenches at Hooge. The village of Hooge was by now battered beyond recognition and the trenches themselves, in the middle of a cold, wet winter were in a parlous state and largely water-logged. They remained in these trenches until 13th January, during which time their positions were constantly shelled and 6 men were killed. One of these was Albert Burch, a battalion sniper, who was killed on 9th January. |
